چکیده

We present a two-scale theoretical framework for approximating the solution of a second order elliptic problem. The elliptic coefficient is assumed to vary on a scale that can be resolved on a fine numerical grid, but limits on computational power require that computations be performed on a coarse grid. We consider the elliptic problem in mixed variational form over W × V ⊂ L2 × H(div). We base our scale expansion on local mass conservation over the coarse grid. It is used to define a direct sum decomposition of W ×V into coarse and “subgrid” subspaces Wc ×Vc and δW × δV such that (1) ∇·Vc = Wc and ∇· δV = δW , and (2) the space δV is locally supported over the coarse mesh. We then explicitly decompose the variational problem into coarse and subgrid scale problems. The subgrid problem gives a well-defined operator taking Wc × Vc to δW × δV, which is localized in space, and it is used to upscale, that is, to remove the subgrid from the coarse-scale problem. Using standard mixed finite element spaces, two-scale mixed spaces are defined. A mixed approximation is defined, which can be viewed as a type of variational multiscale method or a residual-free bubble technique. A numerical Green’s function approach is used to make the approximation to the subgrid operator efficient to compute. A mixed method π-operator is defined for the two-scale approximation spaces and used to show optimal order error estimates.

Subgrid Upscaling and Mixed Multiscale Finite Elements

Second order elliptic problems in divergence form with a highly varying leading order coefficient on the scale can be approximated on coarse meshes of spacing H only if one uses special techniques. The mixed variational multiscale method, also called subgrid upscaling, can be used, and this method is extended to allow oversampling of the local subgrid problems. The method is shown to be equival...

An a Priori Error Analysis of Operator Upscaling for the Acoustic Wave Equation

In many earth science problems, the scales of interest range from centimeters to kilometers. Computer power and time limitations prevent inclusion of all the fine-scale features in most models. However, upscaling methods allow creation of physically realistic and computationally feasible models. Instead of solving the problem completely on the fine scale, upscaling methods produce a coarse-scal...

A Matrix Analysis of Operator-Based Upscaling for the Wave Equation

Scientists and engineers who wish to understand the earth’s subsurface are faced with a daunting challenge. Features of interest range from the microscale (centimeters) to the macroscale (hundreds of kilometers). It is unlikely that computational power limitations will ever allow modeling of this level of detail. Numerical upscaling is one technique intended to reduce this computational burden....

Operator Upscaling for the Acoustic Wave Equation

Modeling of wave propagation in a heterogeneous medium requires input data that varies on many different spatial and temporal scales. Operator-based upscaling allows us to capture the effect of the fine scales on a coarser domain without solving the full fine-scale problem. The method applied to the constant density, variable sound velocity acoustic wave equation consists of two stages. First, ...

A Modified Nested-Gridding for Upscaling–Downscaling in Reservoir Simulation

The upscaled models of reservoirs result in coarse representation of flow for simulation gridblocks. This representation discards subgrid heterogeneities and flow complexities which can lead to an inaccurate performance prediction for reservoir processes. To tackle the problem, reconstruction techniques such as multiscale or upscaling–downscaling methods have been developed to recapture the sub...
